What is decorative, functional, galvanic corrosion protection?

How does galvanic surface technology work?

By a preparatory treatment adjusted to the basic material the working piece is prepared for the galvanization. According to the requirement profile of the element the metal to be separated is selected and galvanized according to the required coat thickness dependent on time resp. power.

In galvanic manner generated surfaces with copper, nickel and chrome or precious metal do not only give a value increasing optic but also undertake functional tasks like e.g. corrosion resistance. In the case of metal-coated plastics you can generate a metallic haptic so that, apart from the mere value, also the stability in value of the elements increases.

The character of an element is generated by the colour and / or the degree of gloss of the created surface. So, the colour range of the separable metals goes from a high reflecting, lovely bright chrome surface up to a non-reflecting, high technically appearing chrome surface. This effect is generated by the nickel coat laying under the other coat which can be adjusted to the desired degree of gloss resp. degree of flatness according to the requirements. The same is valid for the final surface with precious metals like e.g. gold.

Guaranteed quality – environmental friendly

The quality that of the decorative and functional characteristics of the "composite material" (basic material plus surface) depends on many factors:

  • The basic material and its mechanical treatment
  • The preparatory treatment
  • The form of the chosen surface protection system
  • The galvanic separation conditions
  • The coat thickness
  • The necessary aftertreatment, should the occasion arise

To establish optimized process parameters and the galvanic surface protection system which is suitable for this special case, before every coating a conversation between galvanizer and user should take place. The quality characteristics developed from that conversation result in a corresponding quality survey and provide a fault-free coating corresponding to the requirements.

Here, the quality survey should comprise not only the control of the separated surfaces but also the survey of the complete galvanic process including preparatory treatment, metal-coating and, should the occasion arise, aftertreatment.

Decorative, functional, galvanic corrosion protection with copper, nickel, chrome or precious metal is a proven surface system which complies with the different degrees of corrosion stresses. So, the international norm commission (DIN EN 12540) divides these degrees as follows:

1. Low stress
Indoor atmosphere, dry, lowest corrosion attack; e.g. watch casing, household instruments

2. Mild or moderate stress
Indoor atmosphere in humid rooms, outside at protected places, e.g. bathroom fittings.

3. Strong stress
Outdoor atmosphere under moderate conditions, e.g. bicycles, garden furniture etc.

4. Extraordinary strong stress
Outdoor atmosphere under heavy corrosive conditions, sea or industrial conditions to which e.g. radiator grills of cars are exposed – caused by rain, spray water and dirt, rock fall, sand. In summer there is a high stress by intensive sun, in winter by snow, ice and salt.

Here, the classification of the stress levels is agreed between the customer and the galvanizer. Accordingly, the complete process is established to comply with the requirements.
