Double layer (electrochemical)
The term for an electrically charged zone at the interface of two phases (metal immersed in the solution of one of its salts) caused by charge displacement.
The double layer is positively charged on one side and negatively charged on the other and is several molecular or atomic layers thick. Oriented dipoles, electrons or ions form the charge.
The common names for the ions adhering directly to the surface are:
"Helmholtz double layer"
"star double layer" or simply
"rigid double layer".
The remaining part of the ions is in the liquid layer that is immediately adjacent. This happens as a result of thermal movement. This layer is also called the "diffuse double layer" or "Gouy double layer" (after the physicist Louis Georges Gouy).
More rarely, it is called the "Gouy-Chapman double layer" because Gouy had worked with the British physical chemist David Leonard Chapman.
