Weaknesses of aluminium

due to its high affinity for oxygen in the air, aluminium forms a thin but dense oxide layer which builds up its space lattice on the aluminium and thus protects it from further attack.

Remarks

Aluminium protects itself with a relatively stable oxide layer, which must be removed before any galvanic treatment (high affinity to oxygen).
Aluminium has a high tendency to react both in the basic and in the acidic range and to form compounds (amphoteric behaviour).
Due to its position in the galvanic series of elements, aluminium reacts strongly with other metals, which is important both for the course of corrosion and for the selection of electrolytes during galvanic treatment.
The large number of aluminium qualities available makes a partnership-based cooperation between manufacturers and processors indispensable.
